Roses at Lot 57 Selangor Green Lane

This post is for my readers who has written to me asking about where to buy rose plants for your DIY gardening in Malaysia.

If you are looking for rose plants, you can visit Lot 57 Selangor Green Lane. My rose enthusiast cum gardener friends have recommended this place to me. It was closed during my recent visit in December 2011. I guess I was too early then. They are opened daily from 2pm - 7pm. I will update this post with any new information/pictures later.

From the outside itself I can see many many potted rose plants and based on my telephone conversation with Mr Hew Pang Keong, the owner, he seemed to have a wealth of knowledge about roses, planting, care and propagation. I'm sure he will be able to teach and share information on rose growing.

If you are new to growing roses, buy those hybrids which are suited to growing in the lowlands. One example is the Ros Kampung (Village Rose) but there are also many other choices. Temperate roses are more difficult to look after and may not be suited to our climatic conditions. Same goes for Cameron Highland roses - not all can thrive in the lowlands.

Buying Chinese New Year Flowers and Plants 2012 - Lot 61 Paling at Selangor Green Lane

If I don't have any idea and wondering what plants and flowers to buy for Chinese New Year, I'll make a trip to Selangor Green Lane at Jalan Subang-Sg Buloh. Here are some highlights of my stopover at Lot 61, Paling Horticulture Sdn Bhd, a wholesale supplier of plants. You can expect the plants to be in good condition since they are still "fresh from the oven", having just arrived from wherever they are sourced.

Looking at the entrance itself can put anyone on the mood for Lunar New Year 2012! There's the Chinese New Year music blaring from speakers, red lanterns, dragons in various shapes, forms and bright colours of red, yellow and gold are everywhere. It is now quite crowded during the weekends with whole families coming over to have a look and feel. Some come in four wheelers and flashy cars, yet others have their own vans and pick-ups. I have to load all my purchases (not that many anyway, lol) into the car boot and whatever empty space left among the seats.

2. Plum blossoms

Flower Street vendors are telling me that plum blossoms (mei hua) will arrive approximately 10 days before Chinese New Year. So, I can't believe my eyes when I see this here in Malaysia for the first time in my life, haha. Yes, it is real, I mean the plum blossoms - flower buds and blooms among bare and brown branches. I didn't buy this because it exceeded my budget but a couple told me they are buying it and bring it home for their 'first time experience'.

There are quite a number of workers in attendance, who seemed to know their stuff. They also know how to properly pack the items purchased before helping to load into our 'carriers'.

3. Pussy Willows

Pussy willows in multi-colours but I still prefer the original looking ones of pure cottony white.

3a - Solanum mammosum

Solanum mammosum's auspicious name is "Five Generations Under One Roof" (五代同堂) - "Wu Dai Tong Tang" in mandarin or "Ng Toi Tung Tong" in Cantonese and mandarin - indicates great prosperity and longevity with abundance of offsprings enjoyed by a united family living together in peace and harmony.

The potted Four Seasons Citrus Lime (四季吉) plants are just behind.

7. Ornamental Chili

Ornamental chilli plants to usher in some good fortune during the lunar new year

- zhao jai qin bao (招財進寶)

8. Guzmania

These plants are called pineapple flowers or "Ong Lai Hua" (黃梨花)
- meaning is "good luck and fortune is coming your way".

9. Azaleas

Blooming azaleas for a sea of red. This year they have red, pink as well as peach (most expensive) coloured ones. Some are in bigger pots and in tiers.

Azalea is "ying shan hung" (映山红 ) meaning "a glowing mountain of red".
Another nickname is "shan shan de hong xing" (闪闪的红星) meaning "gliterring red stars".

10. Dracaena sanderiana - Lucky Bamboo

Lucky bamboos or "fu gui zhu" (富贵竹) braided and weaved - in the shape of a pineapple, curly or spiral with some looking like rising dragons. This year spiral/curly bamboos are called "dragon bamboos". The pineapple or vase shapes ones are like wealth cages. These are called "zhu long jin shui" (竹笼进水) meaning water entering into the bamboo cage. Some are arranged in boat shape with the words "yi lu shun feng" (一路顺风) to wish for a safe and smooth journey.

There are also the upright ones and lotus bamboos. Many choices in many prices to suit everyone's budget. Plants are in good condition.

Those plants with rounded tops on the right of the picture are Euodia ridleyi, common name Evodia. It is called "A Bucket of Gold" (一桶黄金 or yi tong huang jin) for Chinese New Year.

Other flowering plants include asiatic lilies, kalanchoes, chrysanthemums, orchids and bulbs such as hippeastrum lilies and hyacinths. The popular types and attractive ones are usually displayed at the entrance.

Buying Flowers and Plants for Christmas in Malaysia

If you are still wondering what or where to buy flowers and plants for Christmas and if you are in the Klang Valley, perhaps it is a good idea to head over to Selangor Green Lane in Jalan Subang-Sungai Buloh, Selangor and look around the nurseries there. There are lots of them.

Last weekend, I visited Paling Horticulture Sdn Bhd at Lot 61, Selangor Green Lane. Wow, they have indeed stocked up on lots of flowers and plants for the festive season. Coming here is like going to a flower festival because there are so many flowers in many colours and varieties. Like they say, "rambang mata memandang". Poinsettias, amaryllis, kalanchoes, azaleas, chrysanthemums, cactus, Christmas trees... you name it, they have it. Instant flowers for the instant garden and to suit your home indoor/outdoor decor or house parties.

Paling supplies plants and flowers wholesale. Their products are obtained from many sources, e.g. growers from Cameron Highlands and all over Malaysia, also imported from overseas countries like Holland, China, etc.

Buying Live Christmas Trees and Pine Trees in Malaysia

1. Christmas Pine

During the festive season this year, I find that quite a number of nurseries and garden centres are stocking up on Christmas trees and pine trees. Since there are more choices and varieties now, it may be a good reason to pop in at the local nursery if you are thinking of buying an evergreen tree for your garden:

To be decorated as a potted indoor or ground-grown Christmas tree with lighting and ornaments. The indoor tree can be replanted later in your garden. This way, you can have an Eco-friendly Christmas.
To landscape the garden like resort-living
To grow a pine tree in the garden for good fengshui

We used to have a Thuja tree in our old house. My children liked to call it 'Our Christmas Tree'. When we first planted the young sapling tree, my baby daughter couldn't even pronounce the words properly and we used to laugh at her jumping in joy and saying, "Now that we have a Chitmoot tree, Santa will know where to find our house". Sometimes she would run round and round the tree singing 'here we go round the mulberry bush'. The tree grew very slowly. Waiting for it to grow taller and taller was like waiting for my children to grow up. Now as I am writing this post, I can't help humming the words of First of May song by the Bee Gees. Every season, when we see Christmas trees being decorated and lit up, we still think back of those days when my children were small and Christmas trees were tall. They were still tiny tots then. How the years have flown by and now they are tall and Christmas trees have become small!

I do hope that you can find your evergreen trees to build up many happy everlasting memories to last a lifetime.

2. Round Pine

Pine trees are evergreen coniferous trees classified in the Pinaceae family which is composed of about 115 species. These trees have existed since time immemorial, i.e. about 350 million years ago during the Carboniferous Period, long before the Jurassic times. The height of a pine tree varies from 3m (dwarf) to 80m tall. You can differentiate pine trees from one another by the number of needles they have per bundle/cluster.

3. Norfolk Island Pine

The Norfolk Island Pine tree, also known as Hong Kong Pine, House Pine or Star Pine.

Scientific name: Araucaria heterophylla

This tree is native to Norfolk Island in the South Pacific. It is a very popular Christmas Tree. This slow growing tree can reach a height of 6-12m tall. However, the tree trunk tends to bend as the tree ages.

4. Blue Pine

The Blue Pine, also known as Chinese Juniper or Blue Fir

Scientific name: Juniperus chinensis

This tree is very popular in public gardens, stately homes, colleges and universities grounds. There are a few variations; some with a narrow crown and single trunk, some have multiple trunks growing from the base, or the foliage may be yellow and some are dwarf trees.

5. Sleeping Pine

Pine trees are popular in Chinese/Oriental/Japanese Rock/Zen/Water Gardens. Some pine trees can be grown as bonsai. You can also find them in Chinese landscapes painting and calligraphy.

A pair of healthy living pine trees in the garden is a symbol of marital bliss for the couple.

6. Snake Pine

Pine trees remain evergreen throughout winter and their leaves do not fall off. Other plants drop off their leaves, turn dormant or wither and die but not for the Pine, Bamboo and Plum which are regarded as the "3 Friends of Winter" (sui han san you - 岁寒三友). Together they represent perseverence, integrity and modesty. When pictured or painted togerther, they signify a strong friendship that can overcome all kinds of trials, tribulations and adversity. Old and long-living pine trees are highly valued and treated with great respect.

7. Pencil Pine

For the Chinese, pine trees are a symbol of longevity, resilience and strength.

8. Thuja

This is Thuja, also know as Oriental Thuja or Arbovitae

Scientific name: Platycladus orientalis

Synonym: Thuja orientalis

Origin: China, Korea, Iran

It is a compact shrub from the cypress family. This is a popular tree grown in Chinese homes and on the grounds of Chinese temples and associations as a symbol of longevity and vitality. "Arbovitae" is a Latin word meaning "tree of life". The tree can grow to about 15m tall with a spread of 6m. The needles are soft and do not prick your hand. This is a maintenance free tree as it is drought tolerant and quite resistant to pest attack. It grows uniformly, hence it will need very little pruning.The foliage is dense and fan-shaped. Established plants are drought tolerant. Some trees in China are more than 1,000 years old. There is a dwarf variety that grows to about 60-80m tall.

It used to be a custom in traditional Chinese weddings to place Thuja leaves inside every red packet and gift tray used in the ceremonies and rituals.

9. Podocarpus macrophyllus

In temperate countries with the 4 seasons, pine trees which are non-flowering will bear cones that contain the edible pine seeds called pine nuts that we use for cooking. In our warm Malaysian weather, you won't be able to see this happening to your garden tree!

How to select your tree:

Ask the staff to show you the different types of trees. Chose one that you like according to your budget and your preferences to overall shape, height, spread, texture, foliage colour and growth rate.
Hard and dry soil is a sign of neglect
The tree should not have a lot of needle drop
The tree should not have a lot of foliage that has turned brown and off-colour.
The branches should not snap easily

Finally, remember NOT to prune off the top of your pine tree!

Christmas Tree Options:

1. Imported pre-cut trees - this will cost more than buying a live potted tree from the local nursery. You need to make sure the tree does not dry up or dies before the big day. Most probably, you can't replant the tree after the season is over, so it'll end up in the compost bin or a landfill. You need to cut up the tree into smaller pieces and dispose it off properly.

2. A live potted tree from the local nursery - If you choose a healthy tree and maintain it well, it can last many years in a container or replanted on the ground.

3. Fibre Optic and/or plastic tree - You can put all sorts of ornaments and lights on the tree. After the season, the tree can be packed and stored up, to be recycled again in the following years. A good choice for an indoor Christmas tree.

Pintu masuk ke Expo Flora Klang 2011 yang sedang diadakan di Taman Rakyat, Taman Sri Andalas, Klang.

Lukisan berwana-warni di papan ini sangat sesuai untuk mengambil gambar foto dengan ahli keluarga atau kawan-kawan.

Khemah-khemah karnival jualan dan pameran. Terdapat gerai-gerai yang menjual makanan dan minuman, peralatan kahwin untuk pengantin baru, pakaian dan alat-alat permainan kanak-kanak. Kemudahan seperti tempat parkir dan tandas bergerak juga sedia ada.

This is a good place to shop for DIY items to create your fantasy garden. The neighbour Lot 53 sells similar products, hence one can shop around to compare prices. They often have bargains, sales and promotions which means cheaper prices than those sold at home centers and hypermarkets.

Toads are suitable for English Cottage, Rustic, Tropical as well as Feng Shui and Water gardens.

Now I have wind propellers, gnomes, fairies, mushrooms and toadstools, fantasy houses in my garden. Not only kids love it, the child inside Yours Truly, i.e. me, the gardener loves this too!

This is a 2-piece concrete planter box which comes in bronze or black. It is not very heavy, something I can put into the car boot to bring home or move around in the garden. For the rounded bowl-shaped top, there are 2 choices - with hole or without hole. I use the holed one for holding the nice potted plants that I want to display in my garden. As for the one without hole, I fill it with water and when the sun shines upon it, there is a beautiful reflection of the sun or moon, sky and trees above.

The other accessories such as the mushroom and birds are purchased here. The little guy with the welcome sign and the deer are purchased at another nursery.

SELANGOR GREEN LANE is my favourite when it comes to buying plants and garden related products. I discovered this 'Gardener's Haven' (actually it's heaven for me!) when I was shopping for water fountains for my new home back in 2004. Situated along Jalan Subang-Sungai Buloh in Selangor state, it is about 40km or a half hour to 45 mins drive by car for me to reach here. For PJ and KLites, it is about 15 mins drive?

You can find almost anything you need at quite reasonable prices. New plants from around the country and overseas are constantly being introduced via this wholesale and retail distribution centre. Some examples are roses and jungle plants from Cameron Highlands, festive plants from Holland and China. Here, one can also find wooden, concrete, ceramic, rocks and stone products and statues, water features and fountains, pagodas, gazebos and pergolas in standard shapes and sizes and also custom-made to your specifications. Some of them provide garden design, consultation and landscaping services in addition to selling plants, herbs, spices, orchids, bonsai, trees and flowers. Hey, I can even find Japanese koi fishes, pond construction and consultation services here.

Here is where gardeners and garden enthusiasts, landscape contractors, interior designers and decorators, etc... from all over Malaysia congregate to do their "shopping". It doesn't matter if you are a novice or master gardener, hobbyist, business owner or reseller. There are all kinds of products and services to suit your Garden Style/Concept - eg: Chinese, Japanese, Zen, English Cottage, Rustic, Balinese, Nusantara, Modern, Contemperory or DIY.

If you are new to this area, it is better to do some homework and shop around, check and compare prices before buying. Identify your own favourite vendors.

Do be careful about your safety, as this is a busy highway with many cars and lorries zooming past.

a) For those using the NKVE, exit the Sungai Buloh Toll. Keep to your left and cross the bridge towards Sungai Buloh. DO NOT TAKE THE FLYOVER. The first nursery you see on your left is Ah Chui Nursery. Keep left and continue straight until you reach the junction of Sg Buloh KTM Komuter Station. Turn left towards Shah Alam way into Jalan Sungai Buloh - the route on Google map is No. 15. (Note: Going straight will lead you to Sg Buloh town and Kuala Selangor - No. 54). Driving along Jalan Sungai Buloh, you should pass by an army camp, some furniture shops and restaurants on your right. After a couple of km, the first nursery you'll see on your left is probably Lot 16 SMM Nursery or Semaian Ming Ming.

b) From Kepong, Sg. Buloh or Subang, head towards Shah Alam way into Jalan Sungai Buloh - route no. 15 on Google map. You should pass by the Rubber Research Institute of Malaysia (RRIM). Go straight and look out for Lot 70 on your right, just after the T-Junction to Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (Old Subang Airport).

Selangor Green Lane is roughly Lot nos. 16 to 72 along Jalan Subang-Sungai Buloh. It starts from the junction near Sg Buloh KTM Station and ends near RRIM.

You can shop for potted live Christmas trees in Selangor Green Lane now. The best time to buy poinsettias is 2 weeks before Christmas. For Chinese New Year shopping for fengshui plants, it's late December to early January. For this, I'll keep you informed, hence do watch this space.

I first came to know about this nursery at Putrajaya Floria 2010 where they put up a good show with an impressive display of bonsai trees and a series of lectures about growing bonsai. Due to time constraints, I didn't get to attend their talks at the floral festival but I was captivated by the very lovely, well trimmed bonsai trees, each properly labelled with owner name and plant ID. I had the chance to marvel at the masterpieces created and got a glimpse into this unique lifetime hobby. You can read about if from my blog post here.

That unforgetable experience at Floria 2010 had prompted me to visit their nursery in Semenyih which meant more than an hour's drive all the way there with traffic jams and all. But the trip was well worth it. Actually we were not familiar with the town and hence missed the nursery during the first try. Luckily the owner was very helpful and gave us clear road instructions. It may be advisable to call them first before making the trip in case they are closed during certain holidays.

They have a lot of choices in terms of plant varieties, types, size, structure and shape.

Different plants to suit our budget and garden size and lifestyle.
Bonsai beginners, experts and enthusiasts come here to source for plants.
Gardeners, landscape consultants, interior decorators and home owners also come here to look for plants to enhance their Oriental / Zen / Japanese / Water / Rock gardens

It will be the largest exhibition of roses ever in Malaysia
Roses are chosen because they are often associated with love.
About 800,000 visitors are expected

The 1st Floria 2007 attracted 300,000 visitors

It is estimated that over 100 species of roses from Southeast Asia and 300 species from the rest of the world will be exhibited.

Due to the unforeseen rainy weather in the month of May has caused inevitable disruption on the upgrading work at Penang Butterfly Farm. Therefore, its temporary closure period will be extended until 5 JUNE 2011. Penang Butterfly Farm will be reopened to public on 6 JUNE 2011 and its visiting hours will be revised to 9:00am – 6:00pm (last entry at 5:00pm) DAILY including public holidays.

They have their own growers who propagate some of the plants. The seedlings are of good quality. This is my favourite nursery in Klang.

I am ecstatic because I found gardening books at the sale. The above book cost me RM 12.00 or USD 3.85. The only regret was that I did NOT know about it earlier. I managed to get 4 gardening books when I went to the sale yesterday, Sunday, November 14th, 2010.

What I like most about this visit:

1. CHEAP books - Fiction Books at a flat rate of RM 8.00 and RM 15.00 was the maximum I spend on a single book.

2. Staff here are well trained, friendly and courteous.

3. They have prepared plenty of carton boxes for customers to place their selection of books.

4. Staff members regularly return misplaced books and rearranged the books on display.

5. Staff members help customers carry their load all the way to the cashier counter.

6 PAYMENT is FAST. There are people to guide you to the counter, ensure no queue jumping and the cashiers counters are properly manned, payment is a breeze, there were no long queues.

7. I had expected a lot of hassle like any warehouse sale but was delighted with the smooth experience.

Can you grow the torch ginger Etlingera elatior in New York?

A reader who was from Malaysia but living in New York now would like to grow this plant from a live rhizome. Growing from mail order seeds has not been successful. As I know, the torch ginger won't survive your winters.

The Kuala Lumpur Hibiscus Garden was established in 1989 to showcase our National Flower, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis. It is located within The Lake Gardens of Kuala Lumpur at Jalan Cenderawasih.

Over 5,000 hibiscus plants of many species and colours are planted on terraces and pergolas for display. The plants are grown in the form of hedge, border shrubs, single bush or as specimens. Other attractions include a Garden Gallery, Courtyard and water features.

Two types of hibiscus are on display:
a) Hibiscus species such as Hibiscus tilaeceus and Hibiscus mutabilis
b) Hibiscus hybrids such as Orange Pride, Hawaiian Sunset, Kinchen Yellow, All Aglow, etc. The most well-known being Hibsicus rosa-sinensis 'Dr. Mahadhir' and Hibiscus rosa-sinensis 'Dr. Siti Hasmah'.
